On Saturday, October 11, I was privileged to be amongst a group from the First Presbyterian Church of Rockford, Illinois serving as soup kitchen volunteers for a event that served over 160 people. First Presbyterian Church is one of a number of churches and entities as part of Shelter Care Ministries. It was held at the Jubilee Center.
My new home of about a month, Rockford is a beautiful city next to Rock River. The Rockford Dam is one of this significant River's prime fishing spots. But also, according to the website of Northern Illinois Food Bank , the City's population of 295,635 has 37,546 people who live in poverty.
First Presbyterian Church and the other entities it works with desire to provide nutritious food to all those in need.
GET HELP,
GET INFORMED,
GET INVOLVED!
First Presbyterian Church at 815-968-0478, has Sunday worship service at 9:30am.
Wednesday nights the Church has "Enrichment Dinner," from 6pm - 6:45pm, the meal is $5/person, max $15/family with children 5 and under eating free. Make reservations on the pew pad or call the office by noon on Monday. The Wednesday night Enrichment Dinners are a wonderful way to spend 'hump day' night, and I find it a good opportunity to discover ways to become involved in my new community.
